Intense ruby red color. The nose combines aromas of kirsch, mocha, cocoa and sweet spices. On the palate this wine is rich, dense with silky tannins. It reveals notes
of ripe fruit and a roasted finish. This wine is powerful and racy.
Getting a few “wows” in the notes, the 2019 La Clape L'Ancely is flat-out gorgeous and might end up being the finest vintage of this cuvée to date. A Mourvèdre-dominated blend (there's some Syrah and Grenache) brought up in new demi-muids and foudre, it reveals a saturated purple hue as well as an incredible bouquet of black raspberries, cassis, smoked meats, peppery herbs, and sappy flowers. Rich, full-bodied, concentrated, and exotic, it's a blockbuster of a wine offering ripe tannins, richness without weight, and a great finish.
Based on the 50-year-old Mourvèdre in front of the property (there's about 15% Grenache in the assemblage), the 2019 La Clape L'Ancely is another great wine. Full-bodied, broad, expansive, creamy and lush without ever seeming overly rich or weighty, it coats the palate with enticing notes of black truffles, ripe plums and mocha. It's one of the world's great Mourvèdres, fully deserving of more notoriety.
