Made by the brilliant young winemaker Camille Ournac at his family's estate in Languedoc, this delicious Pinot Gris wowed me at the annual Sud de France tasting in Manhattan earlier this year against the toughest competition. Now that it's finally arrived after extended shipping delays, I'm wowed even more! It deftly combines the manifold appeal of Alsatian Pinot Gris and Italian Pinot Grigio, with an intriguing suggestion of Viognier and unoaked Chardonnay (even though it is 100% Pinot Gris). The pear, yellow apple and white flower accented fruit flows full and seamless over the palate, with plenty of body and richness, leading to a refreshing minerality on the finish. I must also point out that this is no ordinary $11 wine. It's a Calvert Woodley Direct Import™, purchased directly from the domaine's cellar, cutting out the middleman, with the savings passed directly on to you.
