What a crazy nose, but in the best sense! Mulberry and blood orange – what a combination! Huge concentration and huge freshness, with zestiness that's really uplifting. And in combination with the great minerality that makes this an exceptionally exciting wine for the appellation. Dramatic vitality at the exuberant and very long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has an intense, multi-faceted bouquet with vivacious black and red berry fruit, quite a noticeable marine/estuarine influence in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity, taut and fresh with a harmonious, silky smooth finish. Lovely build in the mouth, this is a very well-crafted Clos-de-Bèze.
The 2020 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is excellent, wafting from the glass with aromas of orange rind, dark berries, cherries, licorice, black truffle and exotic spices. Full-bodied, velvety and multidimensional, it's layered and complete, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, resonant finish. This will be very long-lived. The 2020 vintage has turned out beautifully at this address, delivering concentrated, flavorful wines with alcohol levels between 13.3% and 13.7% and with low pHs. Winemaker Frédéric Barnier told me that efforts were made to pick earlier in the day, and that fruit waiting to be processed was kept fresh in a special cold room. In the cellar, foudres and 500-liter barrels now complement classic 228-liter pièces, a further evolution adapting to warmer, riper vintages. But aside from the quality of the 2020s and these technical developments, described in more detail in the accompanying tasting notes, there's other noteworthy news too: in 2021, Jadot entered into organic conversion for their domaine vineyards.
This is aromatically similar to the nose of the Chambertin though, as is almost always the case, there is a broader array of spice elements. The succulent and slightly finer larger-scaled flavors possess excellent vibrancy and focused power on the compact, complex and equally long and structured finale. Impressive.
