Tasted blind, one could easily mistake this lovely Rioja for a $40 St.-Emilion. In fact, I did just that! But make no mistake, this is a classic Rioja from the denomination's finest subregion, Alavesa, and the quality of the Alavesa terroir shines through in the sheer breed of the wine. Smooth, silky and impeccably made, this deep garnet purple wine opens with a lovely nose of spice and hints of vanilla from aging in American and French oak. On the palate, a fine tension between the pure Tempranillo and Garnacha fruit and polished tannins roll along a brisk finish of crisp, tangy tannins from the limestone-rich Alavesa soils. Superb!
