Dubbed the "bad boy" of Bordeaux (a title he relishes), winemaker Jean-Luc Thunevin and his wife Murielle Andraud sunk every penny they had to create Château Valandraud in 1991. Now ranked as a Premier Grand Cru Classé, Valandraud is considered one of the finest wines of St.-Émilion. Not content to rest on his laurels, Jean-Luc has created Origine de Thunevin, a St.-Émilion Grand Cru micro-cuvée produced entirely from hand-harvested organically grown grapes (90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc). Deep purple in color, the 2016 Origine de Thunevin offers lively, intense flavors and aromas of black fruits, red berries, and Provençal herbs supported by a balanced tannic structure. Delectable now, it has excellent aging potential.
La Cheeserie Pairing: Cantal
Named for the mountains in Auvergne, France where it’s produced, Cantal is one of the oldest cheeses made in France. Often referred to as “French cheddar,” Cantal is a semi-hard cow’s milk cheese that is aged for several months, giving it a strong, tangy, buttery flavor that intensifies with age. It is fresh, sweet, and milky in flavor with a light hint of hazelnut and vanilla.
