“The Chateau Noaillac has always been a perennial favorite, and the 2020 vintage is no exception. Neal Martin writes ‘This Cru Bourgeois is well worth hunting down,’ awarding it with a 90 pt. score in Vinous. A classic Médoc with black fruits and light cedar hints. Fresh and structured with a complex finish that lingers on the palate.
In 1983, Marc Pagès and his son Xavier fell under the spell of Château Noaillac and took charge of it. Drawing on his brilliant past as a physicist, he undertook to replant the entire estate. From the initial 2 hectares, the property increased to 48 hectares. Through hard work, Marc and Xavier revived an estate that had hitherto been in decline, thus elevating it to the rank of cru bourgeois.” - Bill H.
La Cheeserie Pairing: 5 Year Yellow Gouda
My second reading of the 2020 Noaillac a couple of months later shows better than the first. It takes time to coalesce on the nose, gaining clarity, but it is worth waiting for. More classic in style, a light marine scent permeates the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, good weight and balance. Fresh with a structured finish that exerts a gentle grip. Fine length and with admirable complexity, this Cru Bourgeois is well worth hunting down.
Lots of red and blue fruits, tobacco, and leather notes as well as hints of flowers all emerge from the 2020 Château Noaillac, a classic, medium-bodied, beautifully balanced Médoc with the fruit to drink well right out of the gate as well as the balance and structure to keep for a decade.
